Hong Kong’s most successful ever rugby player is former Pirate, Flo Symonds, who grew up in Discovery Bay before moving to study in Canada.

Flo plays for the Canadian Women’s team with whom she has won the Olympic Silver Medal in Paris last year, and competed in the Final of the World Cup (15s) this year, a final which Canada lost to England in front of over 80,000 supporters. She also played at the Hong Kong 7s this year, finishing third

Flo started playing rugby in Pirates aged 6yo, and continued to play with the Club into the Youth age groups, including winning the U12 Kim Lam Cup along the way. Many of her Pirate team mates now play for the Hong Kong teams in both 7s and 15s.

She was in town last month as Hong Kong China Rugby’s VIP guest speaker at the launch event for next years’ Rugby 7s. The other VIP guest was Bryan Habana, who won a World Cup and 124 Caps with South Africa.

With a demanding international schedule and academic studies at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Flo was only able to spend a few days in HK.

But she did have time to watch our contact minis U9-12 training at the North Plaza Pitch, and spoke to them about her journey from her first rugby training with Pirates to the very top of women’s global rugby.

We are delighted to announce that Flo will be back over the Christmas holidays, and will be available to host a training session. We will announce details closer to the time.
