The Discovery Bay Pirates lifted the U11 Waterford Bowl on Sunday 9th February held at Stanley Ho Sports Ground in Pok Fu Lam.

The Pirates displayed exceptional skill, determination and fitness throughout the competition. Here’s their road to victory….

  • Their tournament kicked off with a fixture against Tin Shui Wai. Powerful ball carrying and strong running was on show as they ran in 9 tries in a commanding performance to get their campaign off to the perfect start.
  • Match 2 was against the strong Sai Kung Stingrays team – always a closely contested affair. Pirates displayed strong defense, clinical rucking and some excellent tactical kicking to win 2 tries to 1.
  • Match 3 was against Valley Fort. The Pirates moved the ball around, making use of the width of the field to score 6 unanswered tries.
  • Sandy Bay were up next and the boys put on an impressive display, tackling well and winning 4 turnovers at the rucks. The backs took their chances well with some skillful finishing, securing a 4 – 0 win.

This concluded the pool stage with the Pirates in top position set to play 4th placed Tigers in the semi final.

  • The semi final against Tigers was closer than the score line suggests. A strong Tigers scrum and dangerous outside backs kept the Pirates under constant pressure. The boys showed patience on attack and some excellent support play to run in 4 high quality tries.
  • The Pirates faced the strong and well drilled Hong Kong Football Club (HKFC) in the final. The Pirates conceded an early try but came back strong to dominate possession, scoring 3 tries. The final few minutes of the match were all HKFC, and the Pirates held on with a superb defensive effort to claim the win.

Throughout the tournament, the Pirates played with intensity, skill and great sportsmanship.

A huge thanks to the wider U11 Pirates squad, the coaches for the work leading up to the tournament, the parents for all the support and the tournament organisers for a great event. Finally, a shout out to the other clubs in the competition for cheering us on in the final!
