The Pirates opened their campaign with a commanding 6–1 win over Sandy Bay. Sandy Bay showed grit in the opening exchanges, but the Pirates’ forward pack proved too strong, running in a number of powerful tries. This early momentum set the tone for the tournament.
A tougher test awaited in the second match. Valley Fort’s physicality and sharp work at the rucks forced early turnovers, but the Pirates responded with width and pace on attack. Slick handling from the backs stretched Valley’s defence, producing well-crafted tries. Despite a brief scare from a kickoff error, the Pirates regrouped to secure a 5–2 victory and a place in the final.
The final against Hong Kong Football Club, playing on their home turf, drew a sizeable crowd. The Pirates started brightly but were forced onto the back foot with a turnover at an early ruck. An impressive defensive display held off wave after wave of HKFC attacks that followed.
The breakthrough came midway through the contest. A blindside opportunity exploited with pace and power resulted in the opening try. Moments later, a barnstorming run off the base of a ruck doubled the lead to 2–0. HKFC clawed one back in the dying seconds, but it was too late. The final whistle confirmed the Pirates as champions, sparking jubilant celebrations as they lifted the Richard Hawkes Trophy.
This victory was more than just a tournament win. It was the culmination of a year of dedication across the entire U12 squad. Every player in the u12 group contributed, whether starting the season in the heat of the summer supporting their teammates through pre-season training or finishing on the pitch when the final whistle blew.
The passionate coaches and dedicated parents played a massive role throughout the season. Thank you for everything you did to give the u12s the best chance of making this season the success it was.
Stay humble team, 15 a side youth rugby awaits….!
