While the world was giving us lemons, we’ve been making lemonade!

Jun 4, 2020

While there has been no sport for the past few months, it doesn’t mean your DB Pirates Club Representatives (the DB Pirates Board) have been doing nothing. On the contrary, we have all been meeting weekly, if not twice weekly to use this hiatus as an opportunity to reboot.

Coming up this week, we will be launching not only a brand new website, but also moving the entire club across to the TEAM SNAP App for all team management, registration and kit ordering.

Communications are improved through our brand new Mailchimp system, featuring Pirate Mail, there ‘ll be up to date posts on Facebook and instagram, plus we have exciting plans for a club-wide Season Kick-Off Party in the next few months, once social distancing restrictions have been relaxed.

We also welcome several new Club Representatives to the management team:  James Ford representing Hockey and Laurence Wilkinson as head of Minis, to the management team.

Volunteers and Sponsors:

There are never enough volunteers, and many hands make light work. Please consider how you can add your time and talents to the club.

We are still calling for more sponsors in this very difficult time for many businesses. A partnership with The DB Pirates can bring mutual benefits and great opportunities for member engagement.

We’re in this together and we need our Pirates Community more than ever!

A message to all members from the DB Pirates Board

Apr 6, 2020

Dear all,

The DB Pirates Board, managing our Rugby, Netball, Hockey, and Dragon Boating teams, has experienced a supremely challenging 3 months as the COVID19 virus developed, impacting our lives here in Hong Kong. The disruption to all our sporting teams has been regrettable, with sporting facilities closing, games and training put on hold, and in many cases, seasons finishing prematurely.

The Board sincerely acknowledges everyone’s ongoing enthusiastic contributions to our club, through the payment of annual fees, hours of volunteering, coaching and background support, and disappointingly these past months have become incredibly disruptive, unpredictable, and in many cases, totally out of anyone’s control.

Naturally, our primary concern is that everyone in our community remains healthy and safe, and it is with this in mind that the Board has decided to not proceed with our annual end of season celebratory event in June.

We would however like to continue acknowledge our best players, coaches and contributors to our teams, and will be asking teams to vote, as in other years. We will be seeking nominations no later than Friday 24th April. Winners will be announced shortly after.

Please see separate news article about how to nominate.

The Board is also now commencing to plan for a potential family-friendly, all sport ‘Season Kick-Off’ event, planned for some time in August, as long as restrictions for association and COVID19 prevention have been relaxed by that time.

We would like to again thank everyone for supporting the DB Pirates in such a difficult and unpredictable time. We are all in this together and DB Pirates need your ongoing support more than ever.

The Discovery Bay Pirates Board.

DB Pirates Award nominations for 2019-20 Season now open.

Apr 6, 2020

Wow. What a crazy year for all of us. Sadly most competition has ended prematurely as we all try to isolate and stay safe from the Covid-19 Virus.

However, there is still reason to celebrate.

We would like to continue to acknowledge our best players, coaches and contributors to our teams, and are now asking teams to vote, as in other years. We are now seeking nominations to the list of awards shown below and kindly ask that they be submitted to admin@dbpirates.com no later than Friday 24th April. Winners will be announced shortly after.

AWARD CATEGORIES

Pirate of the Year (The POTY)
An award initiated in 2012-2013, the POTY is the Club’s second highest honour and reflects the past seasons’ commitment to, and success in, sport, club management and spirit. It is open to all sections and all levels (it has never been awarded to a member of the Board or its historic equivalent) – Nominations can be sent by Club members and the award is decided by the board and ratified by the Chairman.

Chairman’s Cup
This is the Club’s highest honour and is for exceptional services to the Club. Awarded for services on and off the pitch, through coaching, operational and administrative support, and through contribution to the Club’s development, it is presented at the Chairman’s sole discretion.

“Beyond the Call of Duty”
This award is presented to those who time and time again have gone above and beyond the role they “agreed” to. Their contribution versus what is expected of a volunteer, whether it be as a coach, team manager, organiser, representative or supporter deserves to be recognised. The impact they have made on the players and the Club is sometimes obvious but more often than not, their work and dedication is known and noticed by just a few.

Pirates Dragonboater of the Year

Pirates Netballer of the Year

Coaches of the Year
(from each section)
These awards are a reflection of the contribution to the Club’s success by all the sections. These awards go to inspiring, committed and “professional” coaches who, through their hard work, have moulded the Pirate Spirit and Winning teams – Nominations are sent in by the Heads of Section and the awards are decided by the board and ratified by the Chairman.

  • Coach of the Year – Netball
  • Coach of the Year – Hockey
  • Coach of the Year – Mini Rugby
  • Coach of the Year – Youth Rugby (Boys and Girls)

Senior Players’ Player of the Year
As selected by the Senior rugby section.

The Kay Booker Spirit of Rugby Award

The Leonard Cup
Awarded to the best all round mens youth rugby player or coach, who embodies the virtues of the Club, through to a senior level.

The Ryan Cup
Awarded to the best all round ladies youth rugby player or coach, who embodies the virtues of the Club, through to a senior level.

Send us your nominations here: admin@dbpirates.com
